Beware of “We Buy Homes” Scams

Beware of "We Buy Homes" Scams

Experts and government agencies are warning people all over the country to avoid working with organizations that set up “Web Buy Homes” signs, or call, send post cards or email with such promises.

According to the North Carolina Attorney General’s office, “Scammers are trying to take advantage of struggling families by promising to buy homes for quick cash.”

Con artists nationwide claim that they’ll pay cash for your home, but they actually try to convince you to sign over control of your home.…

Magazines Galore, But Is Next Issue Worth It?

Magazines galore, but is Next Issue worth it?

My answer to whether Next Issue is worth trying was much different a year ago, when the service first dropped support for single issue magazine subscriptions and started pushing their all-access plans.

When I tried Next Issue last year, I loved the service’s vast selection of popular magazines, but lamented the Next Issue app’s snail-like performance and clumsy overall navigation.…

Good reading: What I enjoyed this past week

Good reading: What I enjoyed this past week

I was thrilled and honored that Sarah Titus featured my Car Hacks post on her Frugal Fridays Link-Up Party!

I found a great recipe on the Budget Girl blog for a banana nut smoothie. I made it with Nutella and used extra milk instead of the yogurt. My kids loved it, saying it tasted just like candy.

Seventh Generation laundry detergent review: Thumbs way down

Seventh Generation #laundry detergent #review: Thumbs way down

I recently tried Seventh Generation Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent Free & Clear and found that it was only slightly better than using no detergent at all.

I had read a recommendation for Seventh Generation laundry detergent in a magazine and thought I’d give it a try. Maybe I didn’t buy the the correct version of the liquid laundry detergent and perhaps some of them work well, but the one I bought for $10 at a grocery store just doesn’t clean the clothes at all.…

Should you vacuum your mattress? Or replace it?

Do you really need to vacuum your mattress regularly or replace it?
I can’t tell you how many times over the years that I’ve read about the horrors that allegedly lurk inside our mattresses. They need to be replaced every 10 years because they’re filled with 10 or 20 pounds of dead skin, dust mites and other terrible things, right?

At the very least, you need to vacuum them regularly to protect yourself from all that crud.…

Is Cell Phone Insurance Worth the Money?

Is cell phone insurance worth the money?

I read an interesting blog post about cell phone insurance over at LiveLikeYouAreRich.com.

The post brings up some excellent points about the fine print in smartphone equipment protection contracts, which mobile phone carriers offer for around $8 to $10 per month, per phone. However, I disagree with her assertion that they’re always a waste of money.

Incidentally, if you happen to drop your phone in water, try these tips before doing anything else.…
