Gift baskets are some of my favorite presents to give to my friends and family, whether it’s for Christmas or a birthday. They’ve gone over extremely well when I’ve given them as birthday or Christmas presents. I can often use items that I’ve gathered throughout the year that are appropriate for the recipient and usually in keeping with a certain theme.
Here are a few gift basket themes for grown-ups to consider, along with items you could include in a basket with each theme. Gift baskets are flexible – you can make one for almost any price range and still include several nice items.

Beach or Pool Themed Gift Basket
This goes over particularly well if a recipient has a beach or cruise vacation planned or if she lives near a beach or pool that she frequents. Include sunglasses, sunscreen and a beach towel. Throw in a cosmetic bag if you like. You might also add a straw hat or flip flops, if you know the recipient’s shoe size, and an inflatable beach ball.
Home Disaster/Emergency Kit
Many people want to assemble one but never find the time to do it. Instead of a basket, use a sturdy, waterproof case and assemble items from Ready.gov’s recommendations, including local maps, solar cell phone charger, flashlight with batteries, moist towelettes, manual can opener, dust mask, duct tape, first aid kit, wrench, pliers and whistle (to signal for help).
If you belong to AAA, you can get maps for free. Most of the other items are inexpensive and easy to find on Amazon.com or at Walmart. You can assemble several of these kits as gifts and one for yourself, while you’re at it.
If you prefer, you can even buy a pre-assembled kit, such as the Stansport Deluxe Emergency Preparedness Kit.
Grilling Themed Basket
If your recipient loves to grill, start with a book about grilling such as Cooking Light Way to Cook Grilling Cookbook. Add some grilling gloves and grilling tools. You might also throw in a vegetable basket and gourmet rubs.
Coffee Themed Basket for the Java Enthusiast
Grab some of Trader Joe’s famously delicious coffee. Costco’s Kirkland brand of coffee also gets high marks. If your recipient has a K-cup machine, consider a K-Cup selection for her basket. You might also add an assortment of flavored creamer singles along with, of course, a nice coffee mug or two.
Tea Themed Basket for, You Guessed it, the Tea Drinker
Select an attractive teapot and add some delightful flavored creamer singles. Choose some teabags such as Twinings teabag variety pack, or select a mesh tea ball and some loose tea like Heavenly Tea Leaves Tea Sampler Gift Set.
